Overview

The Oncology research area is composed by nine groups addressing the principal unsolved issues in cancer. Their research covers fields such as child and adolescent cancer, melanoma, Gynecology, Urology, cancer stem cells and the molecular mechanisms of the tumor pathologies.

There are also three groups from the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine. These groups study the use of nanotechnology in biomedical applications to improve therapeutic strategies and diagnostics.

The research interest of the group is focused on the molecular basis of skin cancer progression and resistance to treatment. We investigate the molecular causes for these diseases in order to design effective therapies against them. This is done in close proximity to patients where our goal is to translate our discoveries as fast as possible to patients. In this matter we have recently contributed to design novel melanoma therapeutic approaches targeting cancer metabolism (Oncogene. 2017 Oct 12;36(41):5695-5708) These investigations have been continuously funded by the industry and the 7th Framework Programme European Union, Marie Curie Actions. As a result of these investigations is planned to perform a phase I, IIa and IIb clinical trial. In addition to this, we have described for the first time the genetic alterations associated to the malignant squamous cell carcinomas developed in Epidermolysis Bullosa (RDEB-SCC), a genetic rare disease associated to germinal mutations, contributing to better understand these tumors.
