Overview

The Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Genetics area is focused on the research on the congenital malformations and pediatric diseases. The Fetal Maternal Medicine group creates synergies through the combined work of basic science researchers and clinical investigators in the preclinical basis of placental insufficiency complications and congenital heart disease. The Bio-Cell Fetal group, recently incorporated, studies basic pathophysiological mechanisms of fetal and pediatric congenital malformations, while the Growth and Development group does research on pediatric endocrine diseases. There is also a Genetics Medicine group that combines genetic diagnosis and research and is pioneer in Spain.

The Bioengineering, Cell Therapy and Congenital Malformation Surgery research group is a multidisciplinary team composed of clinical researchers (pediatric surgeons, neonatologists and obstetricians) and basic researchers (biochemists, biotechnologists and biologists). Our main lines of research are aimed at the development of new therapies based on advanced surgical techniques and cell therapy to promote tissue regeneration in human musculoskeletal pathologies, such as muscle and tendon injuries, and congenital malformations, especially spina bifida and congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Recently, our team has been awarded the nTRACK H2020 project (nTRACK: multimodal nanoparticles for structural and functional monitoring of stem cell therapy in muscle regeneration) focused on the in vivo study of stem cell tracking and skeletal muscle tissue healing using large animal preclinical models in a collaborative consortium with a great spirit of translation for human clinics.
