Overview

The aim of the seven groups of this area is to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. The Epidemiology and Public Health group is mainly focused on the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare acquired infections, transmissible infections and on the new preventive vaccines. The Infectious Diseases group focuses on improving the strategies of clinical problems observed in clinical practice. Microbiology studies mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobials, pathogenicity, taxonomy and epidemiology, and infectious diseases diagnostics.

The CRIPS group focuses on the most prevalent aspects of infections in the intensive care unit (ICU), while SODIR group works in the areas of shock, organ dysfunction and resuscitation.

There is also a group focused on infection in immunocompromised pediatric patients, and a group from the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine interested in the synthesis, characterization and applications of engineered inorganic nanoparticles in the field of medicine.

Director: Victor Franco Puntes

During 2017, and following our philosophy of providing services and tools to the medical community, we continued expanding collaborations with other VHIR groups (Ophtalmology, Obstetrics, Infectious Diseases, etc). Many project proposals were submitted to different calls for research at European and National level and for Technology Transfer.

2 European Projects finished successfully at 31.12.2017, FutureNanoNeeds and GuideNano.

20 papers in peer-reviewed journals (mostly in D1) and 5 proceedings in international conferences were published.

Regarding Technology Transfer, Thermoshot project (la Caixa) was granted, following our patented work on the treatment of resistant infections.

2 international researchers visited us, Dr. Lionel Marcon (from september 2017) and the 1 year visit of Dr. Michele Vitali, who defended his PhD in Feb 2018 (Prof. Puntes as co-supervisor).

3 competitive fellowships were obtained: Beatriu de Pinos-B and Juan de la Cierva to Eudald Casals and iPFIS to Muriel Freixanet.
