Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. Thirteen groups are currently part of this area, working closely with top clinicians at the hospital. The area encompasses different aspects related to neuroscience, such as neural development, neurodegeneration, neuroimmunology, neurological pain, mental health, neurosurgery or pediatric neurology.

There are groups also focused on cell signaling and apoptosis and translational bioinformatics.

We worked in clarifying the role of oligoclonal bands and the symptomatic lesion on MRI, in the diagnosis and prognosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), data that have been incorporated into the 2017 modification of MS Diagnostic Criteria. We found an association between grey matter atrophy development during treatment with natalizumab and disability, and maintained our focus on MRI brain volumetry, the prognostic implications of pathological brain volume loss, and the clinical implications of retinal thinning. We enrolled 80 patients in FLOODLIGHT study, aimed to assess the feasibility of remote monitoring of MS through smartphone and smartwatch. We focused on the benefits of physiotherapy as add-on therapy to steroids in relapse treatment and on the possible differences between conventional aerobic activity and aerobic activity through Nordic walking. We identified the matrix metalloproteinase 9 as a biomarker associated with the development of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in MS patients treated with natalizumab and Sema7A as MS therapeutic target.
