The aim of the seven groups of this area is to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. The Epidemiology and Public Health group is mainly focused on the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare acquired infections, transmissible infections and on the new preventive vaccines. The Infectious Diseases group focuses on improving the strategies of clinical problems observed in clinical practice. Microbiology studies mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobials, pathogenicity, taxonomy and epidemiology, and infectious diseases diagnostics.

The CRIPS group focuses on the most prevalent aspects of infections in the intensive care unit (ICU), while SODIR group works in the areas of shock, organ dysfunction and resuscitation.

There is also a group focused on infection in immunocompromised pediatric patients, and a group from the CIBBIM-Nanomedicine interested in the synthesis, characterization and applications of engineered inorganic nanoparticles in the field of medicine.

During 2017, the group presented one doctoral thesis and three new these began. Also, a new member was incorporated. The group has been recognized as a Consolidated Research Group in the 2017 AGAUR call. The participation in a clinical trial to study the effectiveness of maternal immunization against RSV continued for another season; as well as the collaboration with the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Catalonia on the epidEMcat registry and the ENVIN national registry regarding device related infections in more than 200 spanish intensive care units. Among other lines of work, we highlight: the study on incidence and hospitalization due to herpes zoster in Catalonia and a multilevel analysis of the characteristics associated to nosocomial infections by resistant microorganisms in Spain. Also, Dra Campins has been designated scientific advisor in a multicenter project to evaluate an evidence-based intervention to reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections in very low birth weight infants. Among the training activities organized by our group we highlight the XXI edition of the Vaccine Update Course.
