Overview

The area of Research in Surgery includes more than 50 investigators distributed in five groups of research focused respectively on general and thoracic surgery, cranio-maxillofacial surgery, spinal disorders, skeletal reconstructive surgery and musculoskeletal tissue engineering. Their activity combines basic and clinical research together with robotics and virtual surgical planning. Their aims are to advance in the understanding of the causes and mechanisms underlying surgical pathologies, to deliver new knowledge and better integrated patient-centered solutions, improving surgical care and outcomes.

The credited 2017-SGR-1476 group, through its four MAIN research programs (colorectal; endocrine; abdominal wall; and thoracic surgeries), has continued increasing the shared projects, (international) multicentre actions, and publications. It has participated in 3 clinical trials, and 4 Doctoral dissertations have been defended. Two new projects have been funded: 1) To progress in the characterization of human extracellular matrix (ECM) producing fibroblasts, derived from pathological tissues (abdominal wall and pelvic organs), to be manipulated in vitro at a mechanistic level to finally improve upcoming biomaterials for soft tissue repair; 2) To identify new adipose tissue specific ECM biomolecular features of the intraabdominal visceral components, that can aid to explain variations in the response to bariatric surgery and ameliorate the outcomes. A new collaboration agreement with a medical device company, has been signed, in the field of closure techniques. Some of the outputs emerge from a multidisciplinary approach and alliances with partners, such as the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (UPC).
