Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. Thirteen groups are currently part of this area, working closely with top clinicians at the hospital. The area encompasses different aspects related to neuroscience, such as neural development, neurodegeneration, neuroimmunology, neurological pain, mental health, neurosurgery or pediatric neurology.

There are groups also focused on cell signaling and apoptosis and translational bioinformatics.

In 2017, as our most important study, we have developed a new therapeutic strategy to selectively decrease the brain levels of ?-synuclein, a protein believed to be involved in the iniation and progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD), within the type of neurons most susceptible to degeneration in this common neurodegenerative disease. This technique is based on the intranasal administration of chemically-modified oligonucleotides. In addition, we have shown that the selective genetic ablation in dopaminergic neurons of the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase (GBA), mutations of which are associated with an increased risk of PD, does not result in neurodegeneration, thus indicating that a loss of GBA function is not sufficient by itself to cause PD.
