Overview

The Neuroscience area is consolidating its position as one of the largest clusters of research labs working on neurological diseases across Europe. Thirteen groups are currently part of this area, working closely with top clinicians at the hospital. The area encompasses different aspects related to neuroscience, such as neural development, neurodegeneration, neuroimmunology, neurological pain, mental health, neurosurgery or pediatric neurology.

There are groups also focused on cell signaling and apoptosis and translational bioinformatics.

In 2017, we demonstrated that patients with a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) would benefit from receiving normobaric hyperoxia when they show indications of disturbed brain metabolism. These findings, in combination with increasing evidence that TBI metabolic crises are common without brain ischemia, open new possibilities for the use of this accessible therapeutic strategy in TBI patients. Regarding evidence based medicine, our group has led the Cochrane Collaboration review on the benefits of decompressive craniectomy in the treatment of refractory intracranial hypertension in traumatic brain injury patients with increased ICP.

Our unit also participated in several competitive international studies. In addition, we have developed a new experimental model of focal ischemia in gyrencephalic mammal which opens new opportunities to explore the pathophysiology and therapeutic options in ischemic stroke. Our group has also published several articles on TBI patients, neurooncology, neurovascular pathologies and Chiari malformation.
