Overview

The Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM) area was created to enable a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach to research, development and transference of solutions for a group of diseases that are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio- and neurovascular diseases, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and kidney failure.

This area also includes a group focused on Ophtalmology research and the Medical Molecular Imaging multidisciplinary group.

The Ophthalmology group focuses its basic research in the modeling of human retinopathies in murine models and the development of new treatment strategies. During 2017 the main research lines have been, in one hand, the development of a new anti-oxidant topical treatment with ceria nanoparticles for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This project has consolidated the collaboration with the Design And Pharmacodynamics Of Nanoparticles group, developing a patent and conducting a thesis work. On the other hand, two more collaborations have been established with private companies, obtaining two contracts for animal testing of oral treatments for AMD and retinitis pigmentosa.

Regarding clinical research, clinical trials have continued the line of previous years, that is, AMD-associated prevalence. Some studies as Neuton, Bioimage and In-Eye have been completed. On the other hand, in the first months of 2017 clinical trials were initiated in other pathologies but in more recent phases; this is the case of Harrier or Boeringher studies.
