Overview

The Vascular Biology and Metabolism (VAM) area was created to enable a comprehensive, cooperative and multidisciplinary approach to research, development and transference of solutions for a group of diseases that are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world: cardio- and neurovascular diseases, diabetes-metabolic syndrome and kidney failure.

This area also includes a group focused on Ophtalmology research and the Medical Molecular Imaging multidisciplinary group.

Director:

Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili (PSPV) promotes the Research Group on Aging, Fragility and Transitions in Barcelona (RE-FiT Bcn), attached to the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute, and recognized by the Agency for Management of University and Research Grants as an Emerging Research Group. The group’s research, linked to PSPV’s healthcare lines, is clinical, epidemiological and with a strong translational and innovation component. The common cross sectional framework is frailty associated with aging, as an early pre-disability condition, at the community level, or more advanced in hospitalized older adults. We are carrying out a technological development project funded by Carlos III National agency (MEDPHOTAGE, on non-invasive detection of cerebral blood flow and metabolism), a project funded by FEDER at regional level (DIALCAT, on diabetes and Alzheimer disease) and a project funded by La Marató de TV3 (IMAGINE, on person-centered stroke rehabilitation). Finally, in December, Marco Inzitari, the group’s PI, was elected as the President of the Catalan Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SCGIG).
