Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies

Overview

The Immunomediated Diseases and Innovative Therapies is an heterogeneous area composed by both translational and clinical research groups which cover fields such as immunology, respiratory and systemic diseases, pharmacology, molecular diagnosis, heart repair and advanced therapies. Its main strength derives precisely from this heterogeneity and the complementarity of the scientific interests and expertise of the different groups, many of which are currently joining efforts and synergizing in a variety of collaborative research projects.

We found that PM/Scl antibodies are associated to a higher risk of cancer in SSc whereas the use of aspirin is related to a lower risk. We also determined whether an autoimmune response against collagens I and IV exists in patients suffering from heart valve disease in SLE and APS. Although autoantibodies to collagen have been described in rheumatic fever and infective endocarditis, we did not find such an association in our patients. We compared the features of six IgG4-RD cohorts and found that fibro-inflammatory masses developed in all organs; corticosteroids seem to be the only validated treatment and rituximab seems to be promising. After carrying out an epigenome-wide association study, we identified differentially methylated loci in B cells from RA. Finally, we studied the expression of RIG-I in muscle biopsies of patients with DM; the perifascicular pattern of RIG-I not only seems to support the diagnosis of DM but it also identifies DM patients without perifascicular atrophy.
